Vortex Razor HD 4000

Introduction

Vortex has launched a brand-new rangefinder. Up to now, they had the entry-level segment of rangefinders covered with Impact and mid-range with Ranger. We have been waiting for a rangefinder that could compete with the best out there – the wait was not in vain. In April, Razor 4000 HD was released.

Razor HD 4000

Razor HD 4000 has almost all the features a great modern rangefinder should have. It can display the equivalent horizontal range which is extremely useful for inclined shots. Vortex calls this function HCD (Horizontal Component Distance). Holding the ‘range’ button activates Scan mode in which the rangefinder continuously ranges the target – this is a useful function to have when tracking a moving object. The user can switch between Best mode and Last mode. The latter is useful when we want to know the distance to an object that is located behind bushes or branches. What it is missing is a software that would allow the user to connect the device to a smartphone. The electronics are powered by a CR2 battery.

In ELR mode, the rangefinder displays distances up to 4000 yards (3650 m) but the surface must be highly reflective. When this mode is chosen, the response time increases but the device becomes capable of measuring much greater distances. We can range deer and similar animals up to 2000 m away. The minimum ranging distance is 5 yards. A special technology called AWC™ allows ranging in unfavourable conditions. The user can choose whether the distance is displayed in yards or meters.

At 280 grams, Razor is almost two times heavier than the Impact series. This is not necessarily a disadvantage as it adds to the quality feel.

The device operates at 7x magnification and has an objective lens diameter of 25 millimetres. Vortex’s Razor products are known for having high-quality glass installed and this rangefinder is no exception. It amazes with exceptional resolution, great colour fidelity, and edge-to-edge sharpness. Chromatic aberration is cut to the minimum. The optical elements are coated with Vortex’s XR™ Plus which improves the light transmission rate.

Magnesium housing is used for maximum strength and durability. The surface of the rangefinder is rubberized for a better grip and protection against impacts. ArmorTek® helps protect the external parts of the lenses against scratches, oil and dirt particles. The device is IPX7 certified, meaning that it is fully protected against dust and waterproof up to 1 meter of depth.

The user gets Vortex VIP warranty at the purchase, which is a cherry on the cake. Should anything go wrong, Vortex will repair or replace your rangefinder free of charge.

Conclusion

With this rangefinder, Vortex aims to compete against the best rangefinders for civilian use out there. What it still lacks is a software that would allow it to connect to a smartphone. Step by step, though, Vortex is making a name for itself – not only in the field of rangefinders, but also in the other fields of sports optics, predominantly binoculars, riflescopes, and red dot sights.
