Holosun‘s introduction and launch of this product is a welcome change (they haven’t been making reflex red dot sights with windows up to this point). HE508T-RD features red illumination – it is an ‘Elite’ model because it is made of titanium. We are sure that this sight is going to be introduced with green and gold illumination as well.
HE508T-RD is made entirely of titanium which makes it robust. The frame is thicker than on most standard reflex red dot sights, making this device suitable for use in the harshest conditions. It isn’t of the enclosed type, meaning that rain can come in between the diode and the lens. Nevertheless, the water won’t accumulate there because of the drain holes on both sides. The Shake Awake function works really well – the optic is put out of “sleep mode” without delay at the slightest movement. It is equipped with a new edition of adjustment screws with 1 MOA per click. These screws click once rotated, so (except for the provided multi-tool) no additional tools are required for the zeroing process. It has a solar cell on the housing below the ocular lens, which allows it to go into Solar mode. Once in Solar mode, the cell powers the reticle but it is still powered by the battery at the same time if there is not enough light. It comes with a fixed mount for the Picatinny standard. It can be removed – on the bottom side of the open reflex sight, there is a Trijicon RMR mounting footprint.
There are 12 illumination intensity levels to choose from, enough for all lighting conditions. The lowest two are night vision device compatible. Some blue tint can be observed when looking through the lens. It is mostly limited to the upper part of the lens. The buttons for regulating the illumination intensity are a bit small, so you might have to use your nails.
HE508T-RD is well made and offers a range of features. Shake Awake‘s performance is great and works without the slightest delay. The prototypes had a solar cell below the lens – we think that Holosun made a smart decision by moving it to the top of the lens frame. This is, without doubt, a great open reflex sight for any pistol/rifle user that looks for durability and reliability. The 508T is bigger and heavier than its rivals (Noblex, Shield, etc.) at 40 grams (without Picatinny mount) but sturdier.
