The American-based company that supplies both the needs of law enforcement and civil market made the news in 2017 due to the successful acquisition of Armasight Optics. The expectations are high as ever and after a series of successful product launches (Flir Breach PTQ136), SHOT Show 2019 served as another perfect opportunity to showcase what the two forces combined can offer to the market. Optical features

FLIR Scion OTM is based around the company’s powerful BOSON 12 µm VOx Microbolometer with on-board Ai image processing that upscales the image onto a large HD display. This thermal monocular comes in two base detector resolution options; 640×512 or 320×256 pixels. Both offer impressive image clarity and brightness which is important since FLIR’s highly effective BOSON core technology can detect objects of interests up to 1280 metres. There is also the 25mm manual focus option for users who want sharper images using this type of focusing. But the true game changer is the target recognition. FLIR Scion OTM excels in ultra-long range up to 500 metres in the field.

FLIR paid special attention to elevating user experience. The improved user interface is super easy to navigate, so there is no need to take your gloves off. What is more, the new menu set-up of FLIR Scion OTM covers less than 30% of the screen. This way, the user can continue to use the camera even when operating the menu. As always, the user can have their pick of the colour palette as there are 6 to choose from: White Hot, Black Hot, Iron Bow, Rainbow, Graded Fire and Lava.

The impressive 60hz frame rate of this thermal monocular guarantees smooth image viewing even when you’re on the move. Many customers will be disappointed to learn that FLIR Systems can only distribute the grey 9hz model variant outside of the home market due to ITAR export restrictions. But though this situation is not ideal, there is not much to be truly concerned about. When it comes to in the field application, the difference in refresh rate is particularly observable with fast-moving targets. In such situations, the 9hz refresh rate might not be the most comfortable option but it still serves its purpose just fine. If you’re a nighttime hunter in need of a thermal optical device, FLIR Scion OTM thermal monocular is still a remarkable product to consider.

The real treat for tech-savvy users is in the Wifi connectivity. Since FLIR Scion OTM made live streaming easy, hunters can now share their outdoor adventures as they happen on the YouTube platform or save the visual material for a later use. The 2GB of internal storage can store over 1000 pictures and hours of video content. If that’s not enough, there’s the optional purchase of a 128GB MicroSD card. Another desired feature of this thermal monocular is the Bluetooth connectivity. Users can share and export video clips and pictures to other devices such as tablets and smartphones. Some FLIR Scion OTM models that have a built-in GPS even allow for geotagged photos.
