DD Optics is a young company, founded in 2004. Their headquarters are in Chemnitz and Dresden. Development takes place in Germany, but manufacturing is mostly done in Japan. Their success can be attributed to their philosophy based on offering products that are great value for money. At IWA 2019, we visited their booth in hall 3, eager to check out their new products. One of the novelties that we were shown is Pirschler Gen III series of binoculars.
Pirschler Gen III Binoculars
The first thing that caught my attention was the design of the device. It boasts an open-bridge configuration, allowing the user to hold it comfortably in one hand during observation. They are also considerably lighter than they would be with a classic bridge. Another factor that makes the binoculars lighter than the previous generations is the use of magnesium for the body. This material also adds to the durability and overall robustness. In the interior, Abbe-Koenig prisms are installed for ultimate brightness in the twilight. Not many manufacturers offer binoculars with such prisms since they are difficult to produce. Those that do have them in their offer usually ‘equip’ them with a much higher price tag. GPO is the only company I know of that offers an Abbe-Koenig prism binocular at a similar price point (early 2019).
The eyecups are of high quality, made of metal and reinforced with rubber. Once fixed at a position, there is no play. The dioptre ring and focusing knob are also made of aluminium which adds to the quality feel. There are six models available: 8×45, 10×45, 8×56, 10×56, 12×56 and 15×56.
DD Optics used CT-glass and coated it with DD-lucid coating. It provides better resolution and contrast. On the external surfaces, a water-repellent coating is used.
At a price point around 600 €, Pirschler Gen III binoculars are probably the brightest binoculars that you can get, especially the 8×56 version. Magnesium body, Abbe-Koenig prisms, an open-bridge configuration – what more can you wish for? There is no need to dig deep into your pockets for quality when DD Optics is around.
