Introduction
Sightron is one of the most popular manufacturers of riflescopes when it comes to target shooting. Only a few can match the price/performance ratio that their riflescopes provide. The SIII series, especially, is one of the most popular series of riflescopes for sports shooting on the market. I visited their booth at Shot Show 2019, keen to learn everything that is to learn about their new products. They came up with many new things, but in this article, I will focus on their new S-TAC 4–20×50 FFP.
New features
Even though this series has ‘TAC’ in their name, it has been mostly used for target shooting because of its features, including the second focal plane positioning of the reticle. Now, Sightron has launched a brand-new model with some new features that were not seen in ‘S-TAC’ before. Firstly, the new 4–20×50 is a first focal plane riflescope. Secondly, it features Sightron’s new Zero Stop which performs well. Finally, the turrets are of the exposed type. This is basically the first model in this series that lives up to its name as all the previous models were sports shooting-oriented, whereas the new 4–20×50 is a true tactical model.
The S-TAC series is made in the Philippines, and the new model is no exception. It features a Mil-Hash-4(IR) illuminated reticle. The user can choose from 11 illumination intensity levels. There is an off-switch between each individual level, allowing the user to quickly return from the off-setting to the previously set illumination level. Illumination is powered by a CR2032 battery and provides around 300 hours of operation on a mid-setting. The scope is equipped with a 30mm tube, measures 38 cm in length (15 inches) and weighs 726 grams (25.6 oz.) The parallax is adjustable from 9 meters (10 yards) to infinity. The new S-TAC is waterproof and filled with dry nitrogen to prevent condensation in the interior of the riflescope at low temperatures.
The turrets, equipped with Zero Stop, have a click value of 0.1 MRAD (one click moves the POI for 1 cm on 100 m). The complete travel of the elevation turret is 22.9 MRAD, allowing the user to perform long-range shots. Turrets are of the counter-clockwise type. The magnification ring is equipped with a foldable lever which simplifies the magnification setting process when it is cold.
Conclusion
Adding a new model to the S-TAC series is a great move by Sightron. I like the fact that they have introduced an FFP model in this series that has exposed turrets and a Zero Stop – a model that truly lives up to the name of the series. We expect it to be priced similarly to the other models in the S-TAC series. Even if priced slightly higher, purchasing the new S-TAC will pay off considering all of the functions that it offers.
