Meprolight Mepro M5
Meprolight was founded in 1990 in Israel – since then, they have been manufacturing all sorts of optics-related products. They are especially famous for their night vision devices, thermal optics and laser rangefinders. Meprolight Mepro M5 and M21 have been a main choice of Israel Defense forces for quite some time, which proves that they are great products. Meprolight Mepro M5 is an electronic reflection sight designed for quick shooting with both eyes open. Its large window makes aiming even easier – the targets are located swiftly and accurately.
Meprolight Mepro M5 is a robust device, designed to withstand heavy blows. The bottom part is made of metal, while the top part (the window’s frame) is made of durable plastic. It is fogproof and waterproof to a depth of 1 meter. The two levers on the bottom of the product are used for mounting and dismounting on a Picatinny rail – These levers are actually a QR mount integrated into the housing. On the bottom of it, there is a recoil-stop. M5 has a large window which greatly facilitates aiming. Its operation is not impaired by extreme weather conditions – on -30°C and extremely hot temperatures it operates the same as on standard temperature – this is probably one of the main reasons why this sight is so popular with military forces. The product is powered by a single AA battery and can operate continuously for 5000 hours.
As soon as you look through M5‘s window, you notice its tremendous optical characteristics. There is no blue tint or vision distortion – looking through the window is the closest you can get to looking through normal glass. This is generally one of the biggest windows we have seen on a red dot sight (33 mm wide, 20 mm high). M5 offers 4 levels of different red dot brightness intensity. Setting the device to mode 1 will produce the strongest day-time red dot definition, setting it to mode 3 will produce the weakest. Mode 4 is meant exclusively for night vision use, invisible to the eye at day time. The rotating button for setting the illumination intensity is conveniently placed on the side of the device below the window, facing the user. It would be much more logical if a higher number signified a greater red dot intensity, but you get used to it after a while. The definition of the 1.8 MOA red dot is very clear – it is nicely rounded and thus allows the user to shoot at long distances with ease. Close-range aiming and shooting is also simple since the dot is powerful enough to be quickly perceived by the user. Front lens is angled which is normal because of the placement of the LED in the device.
Be it cold winters or hot summers in the desert – M5 does not let its user down. Its extraordinary glass, big window and robustness are the reasons for this red dot sight’s high popularity. It has already been battle proven – Israel Defense Forces have been using this device under the name of MEPRO RDS PRO for quite some time (the name is different but the device is the same). In our opinion, the device is slightly too big. We would also prefer if there were more illumination intensity levels to choose from (only 3 levels of day-time brightness are available – there should be more considering that the dot intensity does not automatically adjust). However, we understand that Meprolight probably wanted the sight to be useful in hectic and critical situations and for that – a narrow selection of red dot intensities is great. M5 is a great red dot sight of high quality that is sure to retain its reputation for years to come.
