DD Optics Pirschler gen III

Introduction

DD Optics is a young company, founded in 2004. Their headquarters are in Chemnitz and Dresden. Development takes place in Germany, but manufacturing is mostly done in Japan. Their success can be attributed to their philosophy based on offering products that are great value for money. At IWA 2019, we visited their booth in hall 3, eager to check out their new products. One of the novelties that we were shown is Pirschler Gen III series of binoculars.

The first thing that caught my attention was the design of the device. It boasts an open-bridge configuration, allowing the user to hold it comfortably in one hand during observation. They are also considerably lighter than they would be with a classic bridge. Another factor that makes the binoculars lighter than the previous generations is the use of magnesium for the body. This material also adds to the durability and overall robustness. In the interior, Abbe-Koenig prisms are installed for ultimate brightness in the twilight. Not many manufacturers offer binoculars with such prisms since they are difficult to produce. Those that do have them in their offer usually ‘equip’ them with a much higher price tag. GPO is the only company I know of that offers an Abbe-Koenig prism binocular at a similar price point (early 2019).

The eyecups are of high quality, made of metal and reinforced with rubber. Once fixed at a position, there is no play. The dioptre ring and focusing knob are also made of aluminium which adds to the quality feel. There are six models available: 8×45, 10×45, 8×56, 10×56, 12×56 and 15×56.

DD Optics used CT-glass and coated it with DD-lucid coating. It provides better resolution and contrast. On the external surfaces, a water-repellent coating is used.

Conclusion

At a price point around 600 €, Pirschler Gen III binoculars are probably the brightest binoculars that you can get, especially the 8×56 version. Magnesium body, Abbe-Koenig prisms, an open-bridge configuration – what more can you wish for? There is no need to dig deep into your pockets for quality when DD Optics is around.

  • I loved the review. I have a few questions. 1.) Does the DDOptics Pirschler Series use Apochromatic Objective Lenses or Achromatic Objective Lenses? 2.) Are all DDOptics Binoculars produced in Japan or others produced elsewhere?

    • Thank you!

Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not list that information, but our guess would be that the lenses are Achromatic. Not all DDOptics products are manufactured in Japan, some products priced lower than 500 € are manufactured in China.

  • Hi,
    Q1:
what is the difference except price for:
DDoptics Fernglas Pirschler 8×56 Gen. 3
    and
DDoptics Fernglas Nachtfalke Ergo CT 8×56 Gen. 3.1 ?
    Q2:
    Are they the same quality?

    • Pirschler is better optically and comes with a magnesium body. Also, it features Abbe-Koenig prisms which provide a better light transmission rate than Schmidt-Pechan prisms in Nachtfalke Ergo.

  • Thanks for the review. Can they be used in pitch darkness, what is the visibility compared to the infrared binoculars.

  • I have pretty much narrowed my list of 8×56’s down to the Pirschler vs the GPO Passion. Any advice to lean one way or the other.
Thanks for your time. You guys are greatly informative.
